Sermon Outline

Psalm 106:38

This outline is an edited version of the one I created for a preaching assignment. My purpose is to point out the major theme while allowing for your own style of presentation.

Introduction:

Sin seems to be having a holiday in our society. Just listen to the news and you can list for yourself all the atrocities that just 20 years ago would have been unheard of. Within less then a generation the boundaries of our society have become so blurred that behavior seems to be going unchecked by any moral authority.

Explanation:

Psalm 106 is known as a history psalm and covers the events that occurred after the Exodus from Egypt to the Babylonian captivity. In the recorded history of Israel we see how God deals with his people and what brings judgment as well as restoration and blessing. God’s infinite mercy can be seen time and time again with his people.

Proposition: Repentance brings restoration.

Key Word: Restoration.

What caused this?

The Israelites had taken up some of the practices of the peoples they had conquered. Child sacrifice was one of these. God makes it clear that he sees this as innocent blood being shed, to idols and it has desecrate the land. Today we sacrifice our children, to the idol of ourselves. Our convenience, as abortion is used as just another form of birth control

Application:

This innocent blood, that is being shed, has the same spiritual effect that it did in the Old Testament, it has desecrated the land.

What has happened?

In Deuteronomy 18:10 Moses makes a list of the practices that God finds detestable. I have listed them below. Compare it to a list of T.V. programs, best selling books etc. and you can easily see what has happened.

Sacrifice sons or daughters
Divination (the art or act of foretelling the future.)
Sorcery (enchantment, witchcraft, magic)
Enchantment (delight, fascination)
Interprets omens
Engages in witchcraft
Medium
Spiritists or consults the dead

Look at the word blasphemy, I found a part of this word’s definition very revealing and powerful.

Blasphemy = "To Utter a curse revile, to spurn or treat with contempt. To speak of God with contempt or act in ways that show one views him as irrelevant to the issues of life."

In Isaiah 24:5 there is a warning given to Jerusalem:“The earth is defiled by its people; they have disobeyed the laws, violated the statues and broken the everlasting covenant. Therefore a curse consumes the earth, its people must bear their guilt.”

Application:

We may not individually be able to stem the tide of abortion, but collectively we can have an effect. We must take personal responsibility for what fascinates us, and take note of how we spend our time, money and talents. Making sure they are God honoring things, and promote nothing that he would find unpleasing or detestable.

What can we do?

Psalm 106:30-31
This part of the Psalm speaks of a time when the Israelites were in Shittim and the men became sexually involved with the Moabite women. The women invited the men to their sacrificial ceremonies and when the men bowed before their gods, the Lord became angry and his judgment on the men was death and on Israel a plague. At this time an Israelite man brings one of these women to his family, at the Tent of Meeting in front of Moses and the whole Israel assembly. Phineas, the son of Aaron the priest takes a spear and kills both the man and women.

Psalm 106:33
This recounts the time the Israelites made a calf, at Horeb and worshiped it. Moses stood in the gap between them and God to keep his wrath from destroying them.

In Numbers 25:10, God stopped the plague and gave a blessing to Phineas and his descendants because he was zealous for the honor of his god and made atonement for the Israelites. Moses stood in the breach before him, to keep his wrath from destroying them.

Application:

God is pleased when we are zealous for the things he is zealous for, and will respond to sincere repentance and intercession. We can effectively fight this battle in the spiritual arena; remember our enemies are not made of flesh and blood. We need the use the weapons of intercession, praise, deliverance and testimony to take back what the enemy has stolen.

Gods Mercy
Psalm 106:44-45

But he took note of their distress. When he heard their cry, for their sake he remembered his covenant and out of his great love he relented.

Application:

The one constant and wonderful truth is that our God wants none to perish and is a God of mercy. The greatest revelation of this truth is Jesus Christ and his sacrifice to reconcile us to God. Let us stand together zealous for the things God is zealous for and stand in the gap for our brother and sisters and nation while they find God’s merciful restoration.
